.577 Snider

Introduced in 1867 by Joseph Snider the .577 Snider was the standard British Army rifle cartridge until 1871. The first Snider cartridges were made from paper with a metallic base and primer. Colonel Edward Boxer developed a coiled brass case to replace the paper case and soon there after the cartridges were made in a draw system.

The .577 Snider was in service with the British military until 1871 when it was replaced with the .577/450 Martini Henry. The .577 Snider is capable of propelling a .570” dia. 480 grain bullet at 1,250 fps with 1.664 ft.-lbs. of energy.
