.450/400 2⅜-inch Nitro Express

The .450/400 series of Nitro Express cartridges were developed about 1880. The .450/400 2⅜ is the shortest of the series and mainly used Cordite as the propellent to propel large grain bullets. Black Powder loads created modest muzzle velocities of approximately 1,650 fps with muzzle energy of 1,630 ft. lbs. When loaded with Cordite the muzzle velocity and energy greatly increased to consider this cartridge a Big 5 round in the hands of an experienced hunter.

When loaded with Black Powder the .450/400 2⅜-inch Nitro Express is capable of propelling a .407” in. 270 gain bullet at 1,650 fps with 1,630 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle. When loaded with Cordite the velocity and energy greatly increased and the it is capable of propelling a .407” in. 400 grain bullet at 2,125 fps with 4,011 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle.
