.45-125 Winchester Express

Introduced in 1886 the .45-125 Winchester Express was available in the Model 1885 single shot lever action rifle. It was only available via special orders and never really gained popularity due to the invention of smokeless powder. Although it is a powerful cartridge similar ballistic performance was accomplished with the .45-90 Winchester.

The .45-120 Winchester Express was capable of propelling a 300 grain, .458 in. dia. bullet at 1,680 fps with 1,880 ft.-lbs. of energy. Ammunition was produced by Winchester until 1916 and it then became a footnote in history. Winchester transitioned the .45-90 to smokeless powder and created a high velocity load, which increased the muzzle energy by 63%. It was in Winchesters production line until 1936.
