.351 Winchester Self Loading

In 1905 Winchester entered the self-loading market with the launch of the .35 Winchester Self Loading. The .35 WSL was an underpowered cartridge and did not meet market expectations. Being Winchesters first endeavor into the self-loading market, they chose to improve the cartridge by extending the case by 0.24 inches. This expansion increased the chamber pressure and ballistic performance increased. Winchester renamed the improved cartridge to the .351 Winchester Self Loading.

Production of the .351 WSL began in 1907 and ceased in 1957, and the cartridge was in production into the 1980’s. It would propel a .352 dia., 180 grain projectile at 1,850 fps with 1,370 ft.-lbs. of energy.
