.223 Ackley Improved

Parker Otto Ackley was born on May 25th, 1903 in Granville, NY. He was a renowned gunsmith, barrel maker, author, columnist and wildcat cartridge developer. Not only was he a wildcatter, he did research and development an several calibers. The most notable was the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer he developed with Bob Hutton with the intent of exceeding 5,000 fps. Unfortunately he only achieved a speed of 4,600 fps.

The .223 Remington was introduced in 1964 by Remington. The development of this cartridge is civilian version of the 5.56x45mm cartridge adopted by the U.S. Army in 1964. The .223 Remington has excellent ballistic performance, however with P.O. Ackley’s Improve case design, performance was improved nearly 20%. The .223 Ackley Improved case increased the shoulder of the .223 Remington from 23° to 40°. This change increases the powder capacity, increases the pressure and the efficiency of the caliber.

The .223 AI is capable of propelling a .224” dia. 55 grain bullet at 3,582 fps with 1,567 ft.-lbs. of energy
